The Market NYC Reopening January 16th

If you are you tired of watching Law & Order reruns because The Market NYC has been closed the past two weekends, don't despair. The Market NYC will be reopening this weekend - Saturday, January 16th and Sunday, the 17th. Take all your holiday money (whatever is left) and return all the H & M and Gap crap and make your way down to the Market. You'll find the best independent designers in New York City, from jewelry to handbags to t-shirts and winter coats. Designers have also been waiting anxiously to show off some of their newest creations for 2010. Already known for its great prices (20% to 30% cheaper than regular retail), this weekend is also the a great time for bargains. Many designers will be selling some overstock items leftover from the holiday season (think BIG $$ALE). Come early for the best selection. 268 Mulberry Street (between Houston and Prince). The Market NYC Open This Weekend

Great News for The Market NYC. Since Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year means The Market NYC will be open for business on Saturday, December 26th. Come down to Nolita to see what the die hard designers have left for you this holiday season. It's the last weekend of 2009 so this weekend is the time to get the items you need for New Year's Eve or belated holiday gifts. Remember, The Market NYC takes a hiatus the first three weeks of January and back for business on January 30th and January 31st.

The Market NYC Gears Up for Fall

As anyone who has been to the Young Designers Market can attest, Fall is the best season for The Market NYC. With the change in season and the run up to holiday gift giving, I can't think of a reason not to check out the market. With independent designers unveiling their new fall and winter apparel (think jackets and coats), new lines of jewelry, not to mention a preview of upcoming gift items for the holidays. In the next few weeks, we will feature some of our top picks of the season so keep your eye out on items that tickle your fancy. TGIF at The Market NYC

It will be TGIF at The Market NYC until the end of the year. Starting Friday, July 17th, The Market at 268 Mulberry will also be open on Fridays! This extra selling day is great news for both designers and shoppers. "A lot of designers wanted to have another day to sell their products and with a lot of New Yorkers going away on weekends, it's sometimes impossible to make it on Saturdays and Sundays," says Alex Pabon.

Over on the west side, it looks like a lot of the residents in the Village have gone to the Hamptons or to their summer shares on Fire Island so The Market at 490 Hudson will be closed in July and August and will reopen in September. But don't despair many of the vendors you know and love will be migrating east for two months including Over the Moon Jewels and Atlantis Jewelry.

Just a reminder, The Market NYC at 268 Mulberry will be operating its regular Saturday and Sunday schedule this July 4th weekend. Open Saturday and Sunday 11am to 7pm.

The Market NYC Returns to Its Regular Programming

For those who have been suffering withdrawal, don't despair. After a couple of weeks of special events at St. Patrick's Church (Happy 200th Anniversary!), The Market NYC returns to its regular schedule this coming weekend (yes, Saturdays and Sundays). That's good news for both designers AND shoppers. The market expects a full house of independent designers on both Saturday and Sunday just in time for Father's Day and Spring shopping. For the best in independent apparel, accessories, jewelry, and more, check out The Market NYC - 268 Mulberry Street, open 11am-7pm.

The Market NYC - 490 Hudson Street will also be back to its regular Saturday schedule after a break last Saturday. 490 Hudson Street is open on Saturdays, 12pm-7pm. Come early for the best selection. Shop independent design!

Spotlighting on .... Sohung Designs

When The Market NYC first opened Sohung Tong (aka as "Tom") was one of the first designers to sign up. Seven years later, you can still find Sohung Designs firmly entrenched in the northeast corner of the gymnasium at 268 Mulberry Street. That's his spot and everyone knows it. Even if you've never met him or bought anything from him, if you have seen his work, you definitely remember it as being distinctly Sohung. When you finally do meet him, the shy, soft-spoken, humble Sohung is probably not the person you would expect.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design, Tom worked as an Assistant Designer for a Couture House on Madison Avenue. Five years later, he started his own collection and started selling at The Market NYC. He is one of the market's success stories, last year opening up his own retail store , Sohung Designs & Collective in the East Village. But despite all his success he does credit The Market NYC for getting his start and he continues to enjoy its vibrant atmosphere and connection with the customer (he has a very loyal following).

His collection consists of handmade, one- of-a-kind and limited edition pieces for men and women (no mass production here). He is a workhorse, constantly churning out his pieces, sketching, sewing, running around the garment district, filling custom orders, and preparing for the Market and his store. Logistically, it sounds like a nightmare but he gets it all done. Recently his fascination with men's ties made way to a new fascination with zippers, creating vests, dresses, boleros, belts, and coats adorned with zippers. Where does he get his inspiration? Who knows? We're just glad we have a weekly date to see his new creations.
